CHAMPS
About CHAMP
The goal of Climbing Higher with the Academy for Mathematics Performance (CHAMP) is to create an educational environment where MATE participants, University Community Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics and Science (CTFMS) students, and classroom teachers can work collaboratively to create, demonstrate and test innovative instructional strategies in mathematics with students from grades four through eleven.
The CHAMP program is developed in collaboration with schools and/or school districts. CHAMP is currently being offered to the Jurupa Unified School District.
Benefits
- Teacher Development
- The program gives mathematics teachers the ability to further develop their teaching ability by:
- Fusing mathematical content with innovative instructional strategies
- Bringing teachers from different backgrounds together to test new teaching strategies
- Providing University support for the effective development of a mathematics academy
- Bringing resources necessary for teaching a content rich program.
Teachers use these newfound instructional strategies to research the ways students process information, giving them the opportunity to articulate about strategies to increase student achievement.
Students
The program, for students in grades four through eleven, provides students with a fresh perspective in mathematics education, by:
Providing a content rich, hands on approach
The opportunity to work with students from various school sites throughout the district
Experience the integration of mathematics in other areas of curriculum
